2023 DISTINGUISHED MILITARY SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENT

Cadet Ashley Garcia

“Crises introduce opportunities to think big, aim high, and grow. They enable us to take charge, make mistakes, implement corrections, and reinforce success. Crises trigger a sense of urgency and strength in humans, and we can always rise above any situation because life is what you make of it. As a daughter, a sister, scholar, athlete, Soldier, and leader, I have come to understand and apply these principles in all aspects of my life. I was born in Caracas, Venezuela. In 2015, the country's political and humanitarian crisis jeopardized my freedom and safety. Two attempts were made against my life, which forced my family to find a way out of the country to protect our future. I moved to the United States eight years ago with my mom, dad, and little brother. I knew moving to another country would present a challenging transition regarding learning a new language and culture. Nevertheless, I made the best of it and developed a sense of survival, resiliency, and adaptability in my life and family.

I dedicated my time to learning the language and caring for my brother for the first few months because my parents had two jobs. I knew I had to work twice as hard to keep up with my classmates and stand out in school. As time went by, I excelled at learning the language and was able to enroll in honors and advanced placement classes. At the end of my sophomore year, my performance qualified me to enroll in two Dual Enrollment programs, allowing me to attend College while in High School. In May 2019, I graduated high school as an Honor Roll Student and the Student Government President. Upon graduation, I earned an Associate of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Technical in Web Development. After high school, I knew I wanted to give back to my country, which had taken me in, supported, and safeguarded me. Therefore, in August 2019, I enlisted in the United States Army as a Unit Supply Specialist and was the Distinguished Honor Graduate of my class. In January 2020, I attended Airborne School at Fort Benning, GA, and reported to my first duty station, 1-508TH PIR, 3 BCT, 82ND ABN DIV, Fort Bragg, NC. "Fury from the Sky!" In November 2020, I became a United States citizen.

As a University of Central Florida Student, I am part of the Health Service Administration Student Association club, where I build upon the knowledge associated with my current studies in my Bachelor in Health Services Administration with a minor in Military Science. I volunteer with Latin non-profit organizations such as Venezolanos in Orlando, Ponte En Sus Zapatos, and Mi Familia Vota, which support and aid Latin families across Central Florida. In my community, I am a member of Journey Church and serve as a small group leader mentoring young adults, and volunteer with my local Boys and Girls Club. As a UCF Army ROTC Cadet,  I am part of the Ranger Challenge Team, where I enjoy building upon my skill set and interpersonal tact. I am the primary team member for weapons assembly, disassembly, and radio communication. I was part of the university’s Ranger Challenge that advanced to and competed in the regional Brigade competition, where we qualified for the United States Military Academy Sandhurst competition at West Point, NY. In the program, I have participated in various training events, including the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge for military proficiency (GAFPB), in which I earned a Gold badge. I have been able to serve my program by volunteering in community service events, recruiting events, social media outreach, and as the Cadet lead planner for our military ball.”
